Colossal Squid Filmed Alive for the First Time

April 15, 2025

One of the ocean’s most mysterious creatures–the colossal squid–was finally caught on video in its natural habitat.

The young squid was about 1 foot long, spotted 600 meters deep in the dark ocean by a robotic submersible. Adult colossal squids can grow up to 23 feet long and live in extreme depths. Ever since the species was identified 100 years ago, humans had never seen one alive in its home–until now.

This successful sighting reminds us how much of the ocean remains undiscovered, and it can inspire future marine research to find other “hidden” giants of the deep.

Now let's think...

How might this sighting change our understanding of deep-sea life in the future?

Amazing School Field Trip: Kids Take Clear, Acrylic Submarines to Watch Giant Squids

Imagine in the year 2037 advanced deep-sea viewing submarines could let entire school classes safely observe the incredible underwater world, where colossal squids fight with sperm whales. Now the only question is: how are you going to get to Antarctica?

Now let's think...

Would close-up viewing of the colossal squid help us protect them? What if we could negotiate truces between colossal squids and sperm whales–the squid’s greatest predator?
